Full text transcript of the Fifty Shades Darker review:

Hello and welcome to my shot by shot analysis of the very first trailer for 50 Shades Darker, the sequel to a film that was quite the sensation two years ago. And yet this morning, it can’t even hate trend on Twitter, which is alarming indeed, not only to fans of the franchise. I wonder how many are left, but also, of course, Universal, which paid for this whole thing and has another movie yet to go. And also this looks a lot of people are saying it looks much better. So maybe this thing can rebound after after the first trailer. But there are two ways something can trend on Twitter, and this has been able to do it in either regard. The first is that obviously people are talking about it. Not enough people are tweeting about this for this to trend on Twitter. But the other ways, sometimes the media can simply power a subject to trend, at least for a little while, you know, after you can tell the difference between the two for how long something trends. But if everyone is just writing headlines about something that gets a trend as well, and you would think that everybody would cover the the the debut of this trailer, but it couldn’t even trend on Twitter in that regard. So that to me says that there might be a media blackout on this film. As you might recall, some members of the media were quite disgusted with the first film, but I always felt that because they didn’t really try to understand it.

Some of you disagree with me of my interpretation of this franchise. And, you know, E.L. James and Sam Taylor Johnson, the director, infamously disagreed as well behind the camera, which is why Sam Tyler Johnson is no longer involved with this project, although I also think she she quit out of shame, which is too bad because it’s the most successful movie ever directed by a woman. But anyway, she couldn’t enjoy it. But I feel that this is the story of a woman who has the opportunity to get herself, let’s say, a discount billionaire. Right. He’s available because he’s a little weird and he has some emotional problems and a very kinky habit. Most times billionaires will marry someone and billionaire social circles. It would be very hard for someone like Onna outside of a fairy tale Cinderella story to actually get someone like this. And so this is a very realistic depiction of how one could. And it seems to me they are, Eddings, very realistic obstacles to the story with the sequel. So I’m excited to go over this with you. I think some of the casting here is absolutely fantastic. And let’s let’s go through it and see what we think. And I’m eager to discuss it with you down below. Also to keep in mind, this is now two men working on it. They replace both the director and the screenwriter with apparently E.L.

I watch I watch Beverly Hills the best, but also New York. And I’m curious, do any of you Fifty Shades fans have the same crossover fandom? But this is, of course, on the West Coast, my bad or it could be Europe, although the foliage to me says West Coast, actually, now that I take a closer look. But they’ve shot a lot of this movie actually in France. They’re actually there. Unfortunately, during the recent terrorist bombing on the south of France, I think that’s what they were there or during some of the unfortunate events that they’ve had there. And I hope that maybe this film will do some maybe some charity donations to the what’s going on in France. But, you know, it really shows the glamour. It sells the whole idea of dating a Christian Grey. Right? I mean, you’ll notice that. What are we looking at? Are we looking at Christian Grace face? So we’re looking at a soul? No, we’re looking at his property and his private view of the fireworks show. I think that’s a very fitting beginning here and very, very handsome cinematography, although I thought this would be terrific in the first movie was also quite good. So beautiful, you know, very tasteful fireworks to which I think is great. Oh, this is hilarious. He’s wrapped the gift in. Would some of you commented that I had some pretty good wood jokes the last time around for the.

First movie, and I’m glad that I can hopefully deliver yet again, you can also say that these are shades of grey, but I see some brown in there. And also I thought it was my first thing was, you know, why would anyone wrap a gift for a woman that way? Although I think that in the end of the day, Christian Grey to some degree feels this is a gift for himself. Right. He’s like, put this on for me to play with you. So he would, of course, wrap it in something that appealed to him. But that is that gift to me does not scream for my special lady. All right. But then again, if you want to go with the wood theme, then I guess there’s lots of ribbons like there. Like, we we just, you know, we use it. We save all these ribbons. We recycle them in the sex room. So he has like a legit mask on. OK, and masks are a very common theme, not only with, you know, relationships and identity, but also sexual exploration. Right. I mean, you know, getting rid of the inhibitions. And if you wear a mask and you drink, oh, you can really go to town. And I do believe they drink in these movies as well. As Vince Vaughn says in Fred Claus, let’s make some bad decisions together, although I think Anastasia Steele, again, thinks she’s making a very good decision.

I mean, look, again, he’s he’s a he’s a he’s he’s on the cheap. He’s a discount billionaire in terms of what she has to do to get him. Now here, are there masks? I don’t like her mask so much. I think the probably well, we’ll talk about it when we see it later. But I think Dakota Johnson’s agent and manager were like, I want to mash the covers as little over faced as possible because she’s going on screen. Jamie Dornan is like, we just cover my whole face, please, because he, of course, was not particularly happy making the first movie. He’s like, how about so I can have a stand and go in there? So they’re apparently going to some cool party here. They’re showing up here. We’ll get a good wide shot of them right there. And the first thing is, I thought this was funny that they had this poor little cute kid with a teddy bear in the background. Right. Like, I don’t think this is a party that even a picture of a child should witness, but at least at least it’s for charity. Right. And I could think of some worse jokes to make, but I don’t want to do it because it involves kids. When I first saw her, I was like, oh, that is a horrible outfit. Why are you wearing so much gray? And then I was like, Fifty Shades of Grey. You know, she apparently some in some ways aware of that of the movie she appears in.

But I don’t think the gray is particularly flattering color. It’s pretty drab, but I would have gone for more silver. She’s found some shades of gray that I don’t like on the color scale. But with the mask, you know, that’s not really hiding her identity at all. But I really wanted to get philosophical about it and think of it from the costume director in the director’s position. Perhaps it’s because, you know, her big theme in this trailer and perhaps in the movie as a whole is no secrets, right? No more secrets. So she doesn’t want to hide who she is. She doesn’t want to, you know, hide behind a mask like Christians like, oh, this is awesome. You know, even that’s too big a mask, even for Robin Robbins. Like, no, I’m good. Even though my my whole life and my loved ones are on the line, I need a smaller mask, please. But, you know, she wants to be out in the open. She doesn’t want to hide. So this is like the flimsiest mask she’ll accept. I also think this is funny. The guy playing the security guard back there, he does like a lot of, like, fringe movies. I think he I think it’s the same guy. He seems to have gained a little bit of weight if it’s the same guy. But he was like, for instance, like he was in thirteen hours, the Benghazi movie.

He’s like a face that you see, he’s like he’s he’s a working actor. All right. So there’s our party. They kind of paid for a little more extras, I think, for that shot. Now here’s the apology roses. Those are some nice roses. If someone said sorry to me, that looks like two dozen roses to me that’s pretty nice. That’s pretty expensive, especially since they’re long stem. He spent a couple hundred dollars on those. So that’s that’s very nice. And that is a realistic book and an unrealistic Manhattan apartment. So he’s like, I really want you back, and that look on her face is great, she’s like a play, I’m playing this right, I’m doing this correctly. Everything’s falling into place the way I would like, including what he says next when he says the thing that melts all women’s hearts. I didn’t expect it to be like this. You know, also, you can see this mask on the table there that looks a little similar to the mask that you can see with Kim Basinger later on. I don’t know why he has that in his office. Apparently still has some bad habits. But, you know, that’s that’s the typical, you know, dream female line. I didn’t know I would feel this way about you. Women, always women always feel this way. Maybe guys do, too. But a lot of times women are like, if I can only get in there, he’ll be so taken aback by how awesome I am that I’ll totally change his mind on everything.

And that usually only happens in the movies or the guys just say and they don’t actually feel that way. So something to remember in real life, everybody. All right. I love the way the city looks now, this is an important city and this is a gallery you’re going to see. You’ll notice it in the shot of her. It’s a portrait of her. And he shows up at this thing because, you know, of course, he’s the you know, when a billionaire stalks you, it’s not so bad as we’ve been joking with the first movie. And that theme continues with the second. So you’re a billionaire. I just won’t leave me alone. He just keeps on no sex with me and buy me gifts. So horrible. But you’ll see, you know, in this you know, this is a darker film. Obviously, it could take some bad turns. But, you know, of course, this never does. It’s the vanilla. You know, that’s it’s not very different shades of gray in that regard. So he’s like, I still like you. And I thought that was interesting, I was looking at these posters in the background being like, who are they? Like old movies that play into this? And it’s like some weird sports room. It’s got, you know, the UFC fighting and stuff like that and some trophies over there. I guess it’s Christian Grey study.

What’s he looking at with that telescope? I’d be like, is that trained on someone’s window? You’re you’re incorrigible, Christian. All right. Well, here he just wants to watch, apparently. Now, this is crazy. Now you’ll see they have their clothes on, I think this trailer is cut very carefully with the new monetization rules here on YouTube. And I think universals like we do not want this trailer to be on Monitise. Well, thank you very much. So they make out with their clothes on in the shower. Now, that’s beautiful. That impresses me far more than that shower. That is an amazing floral display. Wow. I mean, forget the bouquet that we just saw. That is just absolutely stunning. Actually, this is like a current trend in art exhibits. And he’s done it privately for her in this swimming pool. You know, it looks like either a private swimming pool or a New York hotel swimming pool where they don’t have room for a big enough one. But it’s absolutely just stunning. That’s the kind of thing that, you know, that’s that’s a great moment that he’s not even proposing or anything, at least I don’t think so. We’ll see. But, you know, he seems to spend a pretty penny on a small, quiet moment. More fireworks, and if that’s the same fireworks display or not, that’s awesome. You know, he’s like, I have a couple. This is the real torture room where I do all my working out.

And yet still stays pretty lean. Look at that boat, that’s amazing. Now this is where she’s like, no more secrets. No, no punishment. Basically, I don’t want to do anything that you want to do, Christian. You know, I’ve got you. I got you. I tricked you. I made you fall in love with me. And now as many women do, I’m going to totally not be, you know, compromising and meet you halfway. And you have to do everything that I want you to do. So, guys, that’s something for you to look out for. That’s very nice boat. Lots more ribbons. I like that she has, like, such an innocent bow in her hair. Like, it’s really playing up how innocent she is. And I don’t think she’s innocent at all. I think she’s incredibly manipulative as a character. Now, this she has a new stalker. And, you know, as I joked over in the regal top five video that I made, you know, if you like Christian Grey, break into your home. Apparently people think just anyone can do it right. I mean, like, sorry, you know, honor honor is not bisexual, not interested in you to get lost. But this is Bella Heath Coates character, Layla Williams. And this is a former submissive of Christian Grey. Somebody one of of a fan of the book said that this was supposed to be her subconscious. That would be a really weird romance novel kind of twist on that.

I kind of hope. I kind of I don’t know if they pull it off, it would be OK. But I hope that’s not true, largely also because I think I think it’s on a like kind of like this like current Marla Maples, like a really clever gold digger. And, you know, in their totally hey, do your thing, girl. If you want to be a gold digger, go for it. I’m rooting for you. Not like in a judgmental way, but anyway, that’s what’s going on here. She wakes up. Was there someone here? Now this this is a big deal. This is Jack. Hi. This is a publisher that often goes to work for when she runs away from Christian Grey. Now, there’s a whole bunch of stuff that goes on with this guy. He’s bad news like he’s legitimate bad news, not the fun. Bad news. The Christian Gray is I love this actor. I think this guy is so well cast. He’s from the neck. He played the racist, sexist, misogynist, horrible guy on that show. And if you’ve watched the neck, you’ll see that there’s very few things, despicable things that he places he wasn’t willing to go like. He is just truly a horrible person on that show. And this actor, to his credit, still made him very interesting. Someone you wanted, you weren’t like, oh, you disgust me, get off the screen. You were like, oh, you disgust me. Oh, you’re so horrible. Let’s why don’t you use this guy more? He’s very good looking.

I don’t think I actually think better looking than Jamie Dornan. So I think that that’s a good factor here. I think this could really help his career. Hopefully we’ll see some some of you compare to Alexander Skarsgard. I think he’s he’s a slime. You’re Alexander Skarsgard feels like always comes across as really nice. This guy is like inherently slimy, which is why he’s well cast here as well as on the neck. He’s never like sexually abused anyone on the neck. Those neck though. So I guess he’s looking to expand his repertoire. But you know, again, he’s very bad news. And I think that, you know, if anyone thinks that we’re going on between Christian and Onna is bad, will you see what happens with Jack Hyde? But I think, you know, he’s such a despicable character, they could not have done a better job casting him. So I’m very excited about this, not only from a movie perspective, but business wise. I’m excited for this guy’s career, excited for some of you to discover him if you haven’t seen him on the neck. So here so she’s walking away and Christian’s like he talked to my ex, which, of course, is Kim Basinger. If I were Kim Basinger, I would be like, what are you putting me in? Seriously? I think I think she was the dominant. So I guess that’s why she’s wearing a suit at the party.

Right, in her relationship with Christian, if I recall correctly. But, you know, she she’s not messing around. And as I said in my trailer reaction everybody, you know, Christian Grace Money comes into play with Jack Hyde and it comes into play with Elaina Lincoln, a.k.a. Mrs. Robinson. You know, the person who got him into this weird sexual space in the first place. Now she’s in business with Christian. They have a salon business together. And I’m sure she doesn’t like someone getting control of Christian and, you know, presumably his finances as well. That’s what happens when people get married. The new woman on the scene often has a say in how finances are distributed. And you probably would want him going into business with his former dominant, you know, the only person that Christian has been submissive to unless honest plan works. But I think that, you know, I think that Kim Basinger looks a little better than this. But of course, she’s you know, she’s very famous. She’s famous for a lot of things. One of them is nine and a half weeks, which was like an earlier, you know, Fifty Shades of Grey of its time opposite Mickey Rourke. So she’s a big coup for this film, especially because she’s an Oscar winner. So that’s amazing. They were able to have her in here. Now, something horrible happened to you. We’ll see. You’re going to see like some bad stuff’s happening so that mostly you’re just seeing reactions in this trailer.

I don’t want to give it away. So this is the the underground garage sequence that we see so often in movies. Right. Rich, rich people do a lot of business in garages. Right. Because they don’t use the front door. They have to take the back entrance is now here. She’s looking at some kind of file of herself and she’s like wood. And I love the file they put together here. This is like so like like a writer didn’t do this. They had an intern do it right there, like a P.A. on set. They’re like, OK, go. Like, this is the only thing that I think betrays the poor writing that E.L. James is accused of. Right. So Anastasia Steele, they have her birth date. They’ve got her mother, her father. They have her current address, date of birth, and they also have her bank account. And then they’re like, no investments. I like that. That’s like the most important thing on this background check. I think her GPA to 4.0 is so Hollywood, right? I mean, like I mean, she’s very smart, but she’s not exactly the most dedicated student like you’ve seen her. She didn’t own a computer, remember. Right. Or or what. I think she didn’t own a computer in the first movie, some as a 4.0. But I think it’s hilarious. And her only employment ever has been this hardware store where we met her in the first movie.

It’s like you can think of some other job. She worked them like political affiliation and found religious affiliation. None found. And you’re like, really? You can’t even say like atheist or agnostic or whatever, like you can’t think like no affiliation found, whatever. Like what kind of digging is that? I thought that was very lame. It’s also totally like a movie picture. Like just go walk over there, Dakota, so we can take a photo with the iPhone. But she’s disgusted. Everyone has a distinct advantage over me. Running into Christian’s arms and then here she’s like, why am I wearing such an ugly smock? And also her hair looks kind of like a wig. It’s not very flattering, but that seems to be Bella Heathcote again, once again breaking into her unrealistic Manhattan apartment. But we’ll see. There’s some this is supposed to escalate pretty bad with this person. So we’ll see if it happens in the movie. Indeed, I don’t know what she’s going to do. She’s our our. How did she get into our house? It’s like kind of like the ring, like. Right. I’m like, I don’t know. I mean, like Kristen broke in, like when she wasn’t there usually like this you would think there’d be some kind of sound made unless she was just waiting in a closet. Scary real life story in Japan, a businessman discovered that I just have to tell you, a businessman discovered that a homeless woman had been living in his house for months in the closet.

So, like when he was home at night, she would just sleep in the closet. And then he worked so much during the day that she would just live in his house like it was her house. And so always check your closets, everybody. Now, I don’t like this 50 Shades darker logo, because I know it’s supposed to be shades of gray, but it’s too dark. It seems muted. When I was looking for stills for this for my trailer reaction, I was like, OK, is this a fade out or a faded? And no, this is as bright as it gets. And so I would jazz it up a little bit. And they have somebody else performing the song this time around, like we spent the money on other things, Valentine’s Day 2017, we’ll see if it does as well as the first one. So I’m curious, what do you think? If you liked the first movie, what do you think of the second one? If you didn’t like the first movie, are you interested at all in the second one, maybe some of the changes that they’ve made. What do you think of the new characters? And also what is your thoughts on what this movie’s really about? Be sure to share your thoughts down below. And thank you for going over this with me. All right. You can check out some more episodes right now from. And.
