My comment, comrades, its review time once again, Captain Marvel, it’s a movie, I saw it time to give you my spoiler free thoughts. But first I have to mention the obvious. This movie, like most things nowadays, has been clouded by relentless politics from all sides, mainly on the Internet, of all places. I know we are crazy. Everybody thought you have half the people on this side wanting to hate it because of their agenda. You have the other half on that side wanting to love it because of their agenda. And then there’s people like us on Planet Variant watching the chaos from a distance with a bucket of popcorn mixed with Eminem’s, because frankly, it’s quite delicious. Honestly, I don’t have a horse in this race. I don’t need to love it. I don’t need to hate it. Yes, of course I want to love it because why wouldn’t I want to love a movie? I just paid fifteen dollars to go see an IMAX, but I didn’t go into this movie wanting to love it to the point of bias. Now I know there’s going to be some that accuse me of being biased no matter what I say. Welcome to the Internet. We’re only level headed and rational people come to say what they think. Regardless, I’m purely going to judge the movie on its merits as all movies should be judged. Overall, I thought Captain Marvel was very mediocre and kind of forgettable. See, we’re only one sentence in and half of you are already like, I completely agree with you and the other half are saying you’re an idiot, unsubscribe.
But whichever side you fall on, that’s my opinion. And I have to stay true to what I think. If you love the movie, that’s awesome. I’m extremely happy that you had a great time. If you thought it was very bland like I did, I’m sorry. And I feel you. The biggest things that left me disappointed about Captain Marvel are the story and pacing. I just thought the movie was boring a good amount of the time. There was just so many times where I unfortunately didn’t care about what was going on. And I think that’s because the character development was severely lacking. And I mean, across the board, not just Captain Marvel herself, for instance, Jude Law’s character, what was his purpose? What was his end goal? I’m talking about a legit reason, not like a generic, overly simple one. But let’s get back to Captain Marvel. What was the motivation for her actions? What was her end game? See what I did there. But what I’m saying is I can’t answer that question or at least give a solid, legit reason because her character lacked any sort of real depth. And unfortunately, I felt this way with most of the characters in the movie. The major concern there is obviously the fact that Captain Marvel is going to play a huge and important part in endgame, setting the stage for her to then be the central character for phase four of the MCU, essentially with her taking a Captain America or Iron Man type role, which is fine.
Do that all day long. I don’t have any objections, but the character has to earn that place with the audience. Captain America and Iron Man both earned that role with the fans over multiple movies over multiple years. And it feels like Marvel may be trying to force Captain Marvel into that place with the audience by simply saying, look how insanely powerful she is. That makes no sense and it will not work. For instance, the Hulk is extremely powerful, but that doesn’t automatically make him a leader. So with Captain Marvel set to be a huge part of the MCU going forward and possibly take over for Captain America or Iron Man should they die in the end game, I’ve seen nothing so far that would reasonably set the character up to have earned that position. Now, her role in end game may change that and hopefully it does. I’m just purely speaking, based off this movie. I also felt like this movie had no stakes. What did Captain Marvel have to lose? Nothing. She was beating people up the entire movie and no one was a real threat. Then when she went binary, that was amplified times ten, which is a similar complaint. We hear about Superman, a character so powerful that they’re not interesting because nothing is a threat.
But I don’t agree with that argument and think you can absolutely make an extremely powerful character interesting through relatable emotions and having the characters question their own need to be a hero. Should I be a hero? Am I doing the right thing? And so on. The threat doesn’t always have to come from an equally powerful enemy. The threat can come from within the heroes themselves. That’s just one example. But Captain Marvel didn’t play with any of that. She’s just extremely powerful because she’s extremely powerful, which is bland. As for Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, I think she may prove to be a miscast in this role. She’s a great actress, an Oscar winning actress, but not everyone should play a superhero in the same goes both ways. Just because Gadot is an amazing Wonder Woman doesn’t mean she’s going to go win an Oscar for a dramatic performance. It’s apples and oranges. Nothing against GALGUT. I’m just trying to make a point on another note. I wasn’t a fan of what they did with the scrolls, and I know I won’t be the only one. I can’t say too much more because spoilers, but I really felt there was some serious missed opportunities anyway. I don’t want to spend the entire review tearing the movie down. That’s not my intention. I’m just disappointed that I didn’t like the movie because I really wanted to love it, especially with it being the last movie before game.
To lighten things up a bit. There were some good things in Captain Marvel. For starters, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury was great per usual. He also has some pretty funny one liners. And can I say the aging effects in the movie on Sam Jackson as a younger Nick Fury as well as Agent Coulson is absolutely incredible. Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn, was also great. His character was a lot funnier than I thought he was going to be. Goose the cat was definitely entertaining, although I don’t think the cat was as big a deal as some are making it out to be. Oh, and there’s no way I could forget that awesome Stan Lee tribute. It was the only proper way to start this movie as it’s the first one after his death. There are a few other things I didn’t didn’t like about the film, but we’d be getting into spoiler territory, so I’ll leave those out for now. In the end, the film was a miss for me. I didn’t hate it. It was just very forgettable in my opinion. Again, this is all just my personal opinion. I could totally appreciate why people would love it and I’m happy for you. That’s awesome. I just personally did not. There are several MCU movies I thought were just OK like Antman and the WASP and Thor, The Dark World, just the. Name a few, but no matter where your opinion falls with this movie, I think the one thing we could all agree on is we cannot wait to see what happens in Avengers Endgame.
Also, there’s two post credit scenes. The first one is a lead in to end game and the last one is a funny one for the movie. With that said, let us know what you thought of the movie in the comments section down below. But I will say play nice with one another. If you liked it, great. If you hated it, that’s fine too. Don’t tear each other apart just because you have a difference of opinion. It’s just a movie after all. I mean, I love these characters and stories as much as anyone. It’s literally my job to talk about these characters for a living. But at the end of the day, they’re fictional. All I’m saying is don’t get your underwear in. A bunch of someone disagrees with you. Life will go on, I promise. And I love you all. But that’s going to bring this episode to a close. But remember, you have till tomorrow night to win one of three Miss Marvel issue ones, which is her first appearance link for that is in the description below, as well as details on how to enter. But remember, you can always follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram links for those are also in the description. But I’ll see your face next time. Let’s talk about all things comics.
