John Wick film series- a review by Sean Chandler:

The third film, the John Wick franchise, has dropped in theaters, that means it’s time to stop and rank all three John Wick movies from the worst to the best. My name is Sean Chandler, and I started this channel because I was driving everyone around me crazy talking about movies way too much. If you can relate, you’re probably in the right place. Consider clicking that subscribe button with that mind going Jeremy down below in the comments section. Share your ranking of the John Wayne movies. We might agree. We might disagree. But the fun thing is that we can talk about these movies that we love before we go into this. I gave all three of these movies glowing reviews. So when I say worst, the worst is a very relative term. In this context, this is a very cool franchise that has kept their quality standards up very high and they keep upping the action game. So this is a pretty fun Ranchi because I just get to talk about how awesome these movies are and how Keanu Reeves, 30 years into his career, is the best he’s ever been as an action star. So without further delay, let’s get started going in the last places.

John, with Chapter three, this movie takes the awesome action of the previous films and takes it to its most ridiculous extremes.

And that is absolutely a compliment to this film. From beginning to end, it keeps up this sense of danger, tension, urgency as you move forward. And every single action sequence in the movie has something distinct, unique and interesting about the way they decided to choreograph the action just in the first 30 minutes of the movie of John Wick killing someone with the book. John Wick using a horse to punch people in the face, John Wick getting in a chase with motorcycles. There’s even a good bit of stunt work in the film that I don’t even know how they’re able to film it, because you have dogs getting involved in a massive shootout. You have sequences where people fall down off of very high items, get up and keep moving. There’s a long take motorcycle chase fight sequence in the film where, you know, there’s no way that they could have actually been racing down the street 60 miles per hour doing this sort of choreography. But I’m also not really sure what this technique they were using to shoot. I’ve never seen it before. And that’s the whole movie reinventing action in the best way possible. Add to the mix you got great action, of course. Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane is great and his character gets a little bit more involved in the plot this go round. But one of the big stand ups is actually Halle Berry, who gets involved in the action.

I guess she went to the Keanu Reeves School of Stunt Work and she’s doing all the cool stuff that Keanu Reeves does. She does it, too. And that’s one of the standout sequences inside of a film that’s filled with stand out sequences. What holds this one back is I didn’t think the story was quite as strong. Now, of course, these films have always had very simple plot lines designed just to put John Wick in action and give us villains that we wanted to see taken out. I don’t think this film did that quite as well as the previous films did, and especially as you kind of moved into the final third act of the film and especially the last ten minutes. I don’t think this one was as satisfying in the conclusion as those previous films were. So that’s why it comes in last place. Our runner up is John Week, Chapter two, coming out of the first film people we’re talking about, of course, the amazing action, the kind of silly set up of a dog being killed leading to all these people being murdered and then the world building that took place inside of the film, especially with the Continental going into this film. What they wisely did is they didn’t try and come up with another silly device to kind of initiate why John Wick is angry killing people.

No, they leaned into that world building, then expanded on the cool stuff of that film in a way that made sense, developed his back story and brought us into this very cool world of assassins on a global level. And from there, everything got bigger and better. The film kicks off with this slam bang sequence about him getting his car back. That just ups all of the stunt work that was already amazing in the first film. To this other level, what do you get past that Slim Biggera? It slows down a little bit, but it goes deeper into this world. And all of it’s fascinating because they put so much thought into this intricate world of assassins. From there, we start going around the globe and just seeing these beautiful, exotic locations. And it’s one of the things this franchise has always done. Well, it has very cool looking fight choreography, but it sets it in very cool locations as well that are just kind of gorgeous to look at with amazing things taking place inside of it. Add to that the people that John Wick is facing off in this film are better FWS it so it can just kind of up the action. You have some longer fights between him and some people. You have bigger shoot outs with better trained soldiers, with better weapons.

All of it takes what you loved about the first film to that next level. And as you move into the last ten minutes of this film, it resolves its own storyline while setting up the next film in a way that’s very satisfying. It leaves you going, oh, I can’t wait to see that one. As for why this film is in second, it’s not because it does anything specifically wrong. It’s just because of some of the things inherently about the original one. Make it more impactful for me, which. Leads us to coming in, in first place is the original John Wick, somehow they took a premise that sounds like a bad direct to video action movie in created the premiere straightfoward action franchise of the decade. And they did this by taking a pretty silly concept about an assassin killing a bunch of people over his dog and treating it very seriously. Certainly the movie has its sense of humor, little winks at the audience, but it actually tries to flesh out a story, a reason behind why this would set off our assassin. Add to the mix, they designed a unique, modern way of shooting action that is absolutely captivating. Everything is choreographed to perfection. Everything is shot with wide shots. So you can see what’s happening in there, long shots where you can see that Keanu Reeves is actually getting involved in all of this.

And the other thing they did so well was the world building. They designed this underworld of criminals and assassins, mostly centering around the Continental Hotel. In all of it’s just fascinating. Even just the way that they use these gold coins to pay for everything is kind of fascinating, the way they interact with one another, the rules of where you can and can’t do things. Every interaction that John Wick has with someone, you know, there’s a history there, a back story. Everything feels Lived-in thought through, not just like a place that exists just for a movie. From there, the world is populated by an amazing set of kind of quirky little characters played by great actors. You got John Leguizamo, Willem Dafoe showing up. And everyone else is great in the film, too. And of course, Michael Newquist makes for the best villain of the franchise thus far as this father that doesn’t want to turn over his son to John Wick, but he also knows I’m screwed. John Wick is coming after me. I am in big trouble. For me, this film is the most satisfying, largely because of the simplistic nature of it. We’re first discovering who John Wick is. And at its core is this primal revenge story about some guys that killed a puppy. So you want to see John Wick make them pay for me.

That works on every level. It’s set up this great world. It’s just a very watchable, exciting film. So it comes in at number one. If you enjoyed this video, you can see my ranking of a bunch of other action franchises right over there. Be sure to share your ranking down below in the comments. Thank you so much for watching and keep talking movies too much. Source: Youtube.
