Full text transcript of the John Wick 2 review:

Considering how excited I was for the Lego Batman Movie, nobody is more surprised than I am that I find myself recommending John Wick to as the top choice for the very crowded Valentine’s Day weekend and talk about falling in love.

This movie is beautiful.

In fact, I’m so taken with it that I suspect that Ryan Reynolds and Fox might have chosen the wrong half of the original directing duo to Helm Deadpool to yes, here. Chadds to hell Helsinki. Nobody even knows his name is directing solo. Although to be fair, we have not yet seen David Leach’s first stand alone effort, the coldest city coming out later this year. So we’ll wait to reserve judgment, but boy, has to Helsinki set the bar high and he makes his creative presence known with the opening shot of the film involving a motorcycle.

That’s all I’ll say. But it is simultaneously commercial and artistic, and it’s one of the best openings I’ve ever seen for a film.

I’m like, wow, to Helsinki. You have arrived. It’s genius. Seriously, Helsinki should shoot to the top of every studio’s director shortlist. Now, you know his name right now we all know his name.

And the only other movie he’s currently attached to is the Highlander remake. And who knows when that’s actually going to happen. But I would describe his style here as like the movie version, like a personified storytelling of a suicide squad character. Right. Like everything you love about the suicide squad characters. In the form of a movie like in Mesons Sen, it’s so amazing, the color, the energy, the action, choreography, the music, the sound design, it doesn’t even fit on one hand, the locations, oh, the locations.

John Wick two has the best use of locations that I’ve ever seen. Each one is so unique, so inventive and so well utilized in the way that they film it that it’s hard to believe the locations have never been used this well before.

I mean, they’ve been making movies for over a century. How is it the that to Helsinki is the first one to really use them?

I also particularly enjoyed the locations because as a New Yorker who’s recently traveled to Italy, I’d actually been to about 90 percent of the locations in this movie. So I know they’re used well because I know what’s available. The movie does have one floor, though. Oh, it’s not perfect. And that’s that the action scenes go on for too long without and this is key escalating. If they had escalated, there would have been no problem. But this leads to the film getting a bit boring in the second half, particularly when the story runs out of gas in the beginning when they have lots of story. And like John Wick, myth building, legend building to do, it’s a hoot.

But then toward the end of the film, it becomes, you know what, it’s a little bit like playing a video game where at first when you’re watching someone else play, you’re like, oh, cool, this is great. Let me sit down and watch you for a while. But then eventually, if you don’t get a turn to play, you’re like, I’m going to do something else. But I also put in my notes another way to say it is I’ve seen you shoot a bunch of guys already. Mr. Wick. What else do you got?

Yeah, his repertoire is pretty limited, however. And the two things that he does do hold a gun and like kind of like martial arts malaise with people with the gun holding. Kiyono does a good job holding a gun like you could feel that his hands hurt.

Right. I’m surprised his accuracy was so good because he just had like these meat paws, like, oh, I’ve been punching so many people. I really don’t want to you know, he I think he did a good job of feeling very exasperated.

But then when he was tussling with people, I got I got a real kick out of him using Black Widow moves to see a guy use those Black Widow moves, because in movies recently, the whole wrap my body around you and pull you down with my you know, with my weight momentum thing has been something they just have girls do, right. The female characters like not only Black Widow, but you saw in Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, Rebecca Ferguson did that. So we’re seeing a guy do it. Hey, as you can see here, it’s effective when anyone does it. So I thought that was good. And Kiyono was very good at wrapping himself around people and pulling them down.

As for the acting, yes, there’s some acting and John Wick do. Kiyono proves once again that he doesn’t let acting get in the way of the film. Right? It’s just like The Matrix. He makes a really great avatar.

And again, as I said, I did feel his exasperation, although I’m going to do a spoiler review for John Wick and he lost me a little bit in terms of rooting for him toward the end of the movie. And I’ll explain why in that video. But this is also the best work I’ve ever seen from Common. And I was finally like, maybe he could be Green Lantern. A lot of people, people are bringing him up lately. I think maybe it took him too long to do something really good like this. But for a while, people are like, how about common? And I was always like, no. And now I’m like, oh, maybe Rubirosa a mute here, which I think was good for her because she could just use her looks. And that’s, I think, her most striking asset. She makes a great henchwoman. You know, they always have a crazy person. You know, sometimes they’re an albino, you know, sometimes they have a crazy scar. You know, Bond movies are famous for this. And having, like, this androgynous, cool, petite woman, it’s definitely fits into that category. Ruby Rose fits that category. Well, Laurence Fishburne chews the scenery quite nicely, as does Italian actor Ricardo Skar Marcio.

However, Italian actress Claudia Joy Gorini, who plays a crime boss in the film, is cringe worthy, bad like. Wow. And, you know, at first I was like, well, maybe it’s just she’s having trouble acting in English, but her body movements were horrible. She was really not cool. It was really bad. It was really bad. I did not like it, although her scene towards the end of it, there were some very cool visuals. So everybody else did their job except for Claudia Drini, who was really bringing the whole thing down. Then also, I have to say, this is definitely rated R, and while I enjoy a good blood spurt as much as the next action fan, you can see me fan girl over blood spurts. In my latest Wolverine trailer breakdown here, I felt it was a bit gratuitous, you know, like it just went on. There were too many blood spurts that went on for too long. And I just, you know, I have to say, when I was watching and I was like, I don’t think this movie needs to be rated R, I know a lot of people will be like, how dare you, Grace?

You know, we love our blood spurts. We love our murderous action.

But it made me think like, look how good this movie is and there’s so many other good elements to it beyond the violence and the blood spurts, that if it was PG 13, a lot more people would see it. And I really do hope a lot of people do see this film. It really deserves the audience. So finally, I wanted to add that I really love the elegant world of John Wick and the film itself. And this is the highest compliment I believe I can pay. It is this finely crafted an experience as staying at one of the Continental hotels? Oh, so much fun. So, yes, I highly recommend John Wick to to you. I wouldn’t see it on the big screen because, again, the sound design, the music, the action, the color, it really does warrant a movie theater, ticket prices. However, my caution to you in going to see it at the movie theater is look around you when you sit down and make sure you don’t sit near anyone who looks like they might take out their cell phone during the movie or talk because again, in the second half, when it loses a little momentum and it gets a little boring in some of the action sequences, I could see them taking out their phone or talking. And that will ruin the experience for you. Maybe even John Wick, too, is more of a matinee. You know the time when cinephiles only go to the film, right. So anyway, that’s my thoughts on John Wick to I’d be very curious to hear what you think of it, particularly the difference between the first film and the second film, Stolarski flying solo. I think there’s definitely a difference and I’m very excited to see what still has to Helsinki does next. That’s a crazy names to Helsinki, but I hope everybody soon knows it. Indeed. All right. Thanks for watching. And you can check out some more videos right now from.
