Full text transcript of Black Panther critique

Right, then this will be my review of Black Panther. So first and foremost, I just want to get it out of the way and just say I absolutely, really, really liked this film, but it has its problems and I will get into it. It’s not perfect.

But I just want to say from the outset, because I know some people have given this movie a negative review or one person has and they’ve come under fire for being racist, which is unbelievable. You know, if you’re going to put a film out there, you have to accept criticism so you can’t label someone a racist just for criticizing the film and doing essentially what you’ve asked them to do, which is critique it. So, first of all, foremost, love the film. This will go into some mild spoilers here and there. But it’s not that much to spoil, to be perfectly honest, because we know the Black Panther is obviously going to be an infinity war because we know we’ve seen the trailer. But from the outset, this is a movie which is very focused on racial oppression, basically, and segregation.

And it does push an agenda. Right. And that’s not bad. Again, I’m not going to say that’s a bad thing because it’s done in a way which actually works. And it makes sense in the film. It’s somewhat heavy handed here and there, but it works and it’s it’s better for it. It is good.

This film gives a lot of representation for groups which are not necessarily represented properly or necessarily to the best of the ability in these kind of movies. And this does in a really, really good way. It’s not the first to be a movie to have a black superhero, though I say that from the outset because Blade was around a lot of people. Townson this is the first black superhero movie. It’s not. It’s a really good one, but it’s not the first. So kind of all of that out the way. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of it. Chadwick Boseman is an amazing Black Panther. I, I kind of went into this thinking, is he going to be that good? Am I going to be bothered to listen to him putting on that accent for, you know, two hours, 15 minutes? This is a long film. Can I listen to him for that long? Yeah, you get used to it. It’s actually not that bad. And it’s not monotonous like you’d expect it to be. I expected it to be. And it’s not actually really, really works. Michael Jordan. Oh, my God. Such a good character. Kill Monga. Eric kill Mongar.

This guy. I need to get into this. This is probably, in my eyes, the best Marvel villain we’ve had and ever kill Mongar. Michael Jordan is a powerful villain, not powerful because of his power and his skill set, because he is essentially an opposite the Black Panther. Right. Which I don’t I don’t to get into the reasons for why that isn’t that interesting. The most compelling thing about this character is his conviction, his emotional backing, his desire, and essentially what this guy has been through to make him who he is as the villain for this film. And he is the driving force behind this film for why it is so good. Every scene with this guy was fantastic. You feel what he feels.

You you absolutely are torn between wanting him to achieve what he wants, but also going he can’t achieve what he wants because it’s not right. But it is as well.

It’s it’s a torn villain and it’s portrayed so, so good. Michael B. Jordan, I’m really, really glad he had another shot in a superhero film outside of that trash. Fantastic Four. Fantastic. It is very, very good. He was absolutely superb. I believed him. I like I said, I was torn between wanting him to achieve what he set out to do, but also wanting Chadwick Boseman to kick his ass. So the villain aside, they have absolutely corrected their issue in my eyes, behind the whole Marvel villain problem, which they are renowned for. Lupita Nyong’o pronunciation to one side. Awesome, great. Really very good to see her in something a little bit more than, you know, some kind of CGI. And the other stuff that she’s been in. I thought she was fantastic, really, really liked her character. Forest Whitaker was a pleasant surprise. Really liked him as well. Daniel Kohala, again, pronunciation to one side. Great. Not really in it for that long, but good. Kind of conflicted here and there. Angela Bassett, awesome. She played Chadwick Boseman mother or Black Panthers mother. And again, really, really good.

I will say this is Andy Serkis as the Claw or Ulysses Claw.

So good. Oh what a great character. And again, I said spoilers, but what a shame that he’s dead. This is one character that they could actually bring back because Clore was funny.

He was.

Oh, he was just he takes great pride in being an asshole. This is good. This is a guy that you watch on the screen and you go, yep, he loves being a villain and it’s fun to watch. It was really, really, really good. And Leticia writes, as a Black Panther sister, very, very good. Really, really liked her. Actually, she was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t really expecting that much from her in this film. But she’s probably the sleeper hit, I guess, to this movie. She was the kind of standout that you weren’t really expecting. Now, those are kind of all of the great things. You know, the acting was solid, the characters were great. The villain was absolutely superb. And like I say, although they are pushing an agenda, it was fine. Like, it’s not something which was a hindrance to the to the narrative. It was actually fine. I didn’t take a step back from this movie like I did with The Last Jedi and go, oh, they’re pushing some political agenda here. I don’t really like this. It made sense. I absolutely bought it and I liked it. And it wasn’t it wasn’t bad at all. However, they contradicted themselves in universe. And now this is where I’m going to get to the bad and there is bad. And it needs to be said, you can’t put a film out there and not expect some negative critique for it. They set up this universe or nation of Wauconda as a segregated nation. It’s not touch the outside world at all. It’s technology, it’s architecture. Everything is unique and it’s built itself for itself. And that is it doesn’t make sense, though. And I’ll say this, this is my main gripe about this movie.

The moment we come into Wauconda, I’m looking at buildings that look like buildings in London. You’ve got a building which looks like the Shard.

You’ve got a building which looks like the Gherkin and various other skyscraper like structures, which are extremely reminiscent, if not nearly identical to Westernized culture, which doesn’t make sense in universe. They’ve contradicted themselves in their own film. And that I have an issue with because that actually removed me from what they were trying to portray, which was this segregated nation that was so isolated, so technologically advanced, but all by themselves. If that was the case, none of these buildings would look like Western culture. They just wouldn’t they you wouldn’t have a building which is nearly identical to the Gherkin. Again, you just wouldn’t know. Like I said, I don’t have an issue with the fact that they’re pushing this agenda or, you know, the racial oppression. I’ve got no issue with that at all. That’s not what I have an issue with. I take umbrage with the fact that they can’t stick to it in their own film. So that’s that is my main gripe. But getting back to the good, because, you know, we like to compliment sandwich, I guess, because I’m going to have a bunch of people said I’m racist now, but let’s compliment sandwich, this statement and this review with the fact that the action scenes with some of the best choreographed I’ve seen in a Marvel movie, it was, again, some of the best. This is probably my second favorite Marvel movie, and it’s for different reasons. I write Guardians of the Galaxy as my absolute all time favorite, and I’m not a Marvel fanboy. There’s Marvel movies, which I think are absolute garbage, but I like Guardians of the Galaxy because it’s fun. I like Black Panther for separate reasons, has a great pace, has a good story. The villain is absolutely superb and extremely believable. And he pulled it off Michael B. Jordan and is acting in that was solid.

We are an interview with Michael B. Jordan saying that he took his inspiration from the likes of Heath Ledger, you know, to kind of put this performance together of this this villain with utter conviction. And, yeah, I can I can genuinely believe it. The action was solid. The choreography to the action was great. But my main issue was just the architectural designs. Like, it just didn’t make sense to me. I’m watching this film thinking, yep, this is an African nation which had been segregated even from the rest of Africa.

And yet it has a building which looks like the Gherkin. I could hop on a tube because I live in London and I can go and look at a building which looks pretty much identical to that. That threw me out of this movie.

It’s not overly long. I said from the outset that it’s, you know, two hours, fifteen minutes and it seems like a long film, but the pace is so good it does kind of chug along. It’s not perfect. I don’t think everyone’s going to like this movie. And I don’t think you have to you don’t have to be racist or not like this movie, but it’s a good film. I would genuinely say go and watch it. I watched it on an IMAX screen, had a great experience doing so.

I do not have any issue recommending this film to anyone but be warned about the skyscrapers looking like Westernized culture so that out of the way have you seen Black Panther? If you have, please do let me know down below in the comments section. Let me know if you have the same issues that I had or whether you shared any of the sentiments that I shared. I know a lot of people have been kind of put on this film has been put on this pedestal like. So no one person been labelled a racist for not thinking it was amazing, but like I say, at a good time, but I would like to know whether anyone, you know, didn’t like it or they shared kind of the same issues which I had with it. So let me know down below in the comments section, subscribe for more movie reviews in the future. Check out my other contents. As always, I’ll be missed and I will catch you in the comments section.
