Wow, what a difference a director makes, and I got to tell you, not the difference I had anticipated, but before we get started, I just want to make it clear, because it might not be crystal clear from the beginning of this review that I love Deadpool, too.

It is a spectacular film, but based on David Lynch’s previous work, I had expected Deadpool to to be as action heavy as the first film. However, that is not the case. I feel that Tim Miller’s version didn’t just have more action but had better action, however. There’s however, don’t worry.

Deadpool, too, is a much funnier film. The audience at the press screening was literally roaring with laughter, myself included throughout. I would actually say this is funny and is extreme, I guess you could say, in the style of comedy as a Jim Carrey movie during his heyday, but like on steroids, not just because Ryan Reynolds turns it up to an 11, but this is also a slicker movie, right? It just looks really good. It’s super mainstream. It’s a super mainstream package, is how I would describe it. And I can see on that note why David Leach has been getting so many offers off of this movie. You know, often before a movie comes out, there’s still buzz about it around town from those who have seen it. And he is a studio guy. He has turned into a studio man. He knows what the studio needs and he gives it to them, but isn’t what the fans need.

I believe that for most fans it will be. But there is a small group of fans that I’m a little worried about. Let me explain.

So I feel that hardcore some hardcore Deadpool fans who want the more Howard Stern version of the character, a harda might be a tad disappointed. If you are, I feel sorry for you because this is a really good movie and if you can’t enjoy it for what it is. Well, hopefully your numbers are small because one thing that’s going to disappoint you and that surprised me was that this movie has so much heart. Deadpool is surprisingly sweet in this movie, so kind and caring.

And as a result, even though there are still tons of swear words in the film, lots of Gore sex jokes, it still feels like a soft R.

And actually, Ryan Reynolds, as Deadpool makes a comment about, like in the movie, if kids can see it and I think, you know, 13 it up would be just fine with this movie. I think, you know, again, it comes across, even though it still has edges, they’re softened edges. I didn’t think the Joe Kelly run of the character, that’s how I would describe it, who was very popular. But it’s very different than the recent comics featuring Deadpool. So it’s going to be a little jarring for some of you and all. But on that note, with the Origin story out of the way, speaking of comics, I haven’t felt that a movie represents the comic book reading experience this well since the first Avengers movie, I had the same deja vu experience sitting in my seat at the theater. I felt like I was shunted back to like sitting reading the paper comic because I have such good memories of it and what that felt like. I’m just being like I’m having such a good time reading this comic. And I felt that exact way watching this movie. I think the Deadpool two perfectly captures the Joe Kelly Deadpool comic book experience. And I loved it. I really, really loved it.

Also, something interesting about the movie is that it has so many surprises in it, like they did that whole spoof of, you know, Danos demands your silence. But this movie, like Legit, has amazing spoilers in it. I was impressed not just with all the cameos in Easter eggs, but how much story they were able to hide from us in the trailers. So much happens. You’re like, wow, are you covering a lot of ground here? And so that also was very enjoyable. There’s also an amazing end credit sequence, which everyone’s already buzzing about from the press screenings. And I will tell you that it doesn’t set up any future installments for Deadpool or the X-Men, I suspect maybe because they don’t know what studio will own them in the near future. But it was kind of refreshing, actually, to just have a really fun and credit sequence that was, again, absolutely hysterical. So I urge you to avoid spoilers as best you can to optimize your moviegoing experience. It’s not as crucial as with Infinity War, but it will it will make a difference. Also, pay attention to the venture. You see him for a split second. And it was an amazing, an amazing cameo. It was so good. But it really is like you could really easily miss it. So, you know, you have to be really sharp. So as you can see, I loved this movie. What did I love about it specifically? Well, here’s my list in order.

First off, Ryan Reynolds, what a performance. It’s pure, uncut, Ryan Reynolds. And it is a joy to behold. It’s a bold for the fans performance, which is why I think it’s such a joy. He has made a commentary not just about the comics and like the X-Men, but also Hollywood. The business of Hollywood is I’ve seen a couple of people come and he knows he’s in a cinematic university, knows about Fox. It’s great. And clearly, Ryan Reynolds and we can tell this from his social media already, but it’s in the movie. He’s dialed in to everything that we follow and discuss and care about. He also this is going to be very nice for some of you. He more than makes up, makes it up to the LGBT community after he queer baited everybody on the first film. This is a very truly pansexual version of the character, which is portrayed in a very funny way, but also in a way that’s very sincere. I don’t think anybody would find it off putting you know, some people are like, I don’t want that in a Deadpool movie. I think it’s I think it’s a real crowd pleaser. I think it’s done very, very well. There’s a great joke about it towards the end of the movie. It’s so funny. And also a lot of great physical humor for Deadpool with some great assists from the VFX department.

Wow. So good. Next up, the soundtrack love the soundtrack. And I’m not talking like the musical score. I’m talking the song choices. Wow. You know, you’ve got to pay to license these songs. And this was money well spent not only with the song choices surprising, but they are very clever and just great songs. You’re like, Oh, I love this song. It’s not if, for instance, if you saw my trailer reaction to the Lego Batman Movie, they had we built this city and I just like that just made such a big difference to me, just the fact that it was the song and it was such a great match with the material. That song isn’t in this movie, but that’s, I think, the best example I can give you without spoilers of how great, how great it is like that reaction is when you’re like, it’s the perfect song and I love this.

Many, many times during the movie, the song choice, plus the joke or a scene, and not just like a little plus it like sent it into hyperdrive, it was fantastic. The next Josh Brolin boy is having a great month. Right. His role here is a lot smaller than it is an infinity war, obviously. But he takes both roles very seriously as an actor. And it makes a huge difference. And I have to say it’s appreciated, especially when you see some other actors not taking it quite as seriously. The whole cast is superb, including Zazie Beats. I was I didn’t even think I was going to mention her in this review, but I was like, people will be disappointed. But let me just tell you, you see most of her moments in the trailers already, I’m sorry to say, but it’s really Ryan Reynolds movie and all the other characters roles are pretty small. We’ll talk about it in the spoiler review. But I even have to say Peter does not have a very large role in the movie, which I thought would be hugely disappointing to me. But the movie, again, more than made up for in other areas. The only character that I did not like was Dale Pinder, who I felt was just too force. This time around. I was like, why did you why don’t you increase the screen time for this character? You know, I think it was just enough the first time around.

I mean, the jokes weren’t at all funny that he had. And then also there are some really unfortunate stereotypes going around right now about people from the Middle East or people whose families come from the Middle East. And this movie isn’t doing them any favors. And I mean, especially if it’s not going to be funny, it’s like, why would you do this to people? I mean, having to go around saying that he wants to just kill innocent people and bathe in the blood, bathe in their blood? Well, I mean, like, he doesn’t feel they’re innocent, but his judgment seems very questionable. So I was bad. But I will say that Julian Dennison’s character was like the total opposite of that. And I thought that was very nice, that nuance was appreciated. And I actually liked his character quite a bit. In fact, I would say he has. Julian Dennison has as big a role is Josh Brolin does in the movie and makes a strong impression, which was very nice about pendas, just a small blip and in what is otherwise an immensely entertaining film. It’s a real summer blockbuster boy, a real fizzy soda and popcorn and leather recliner type of movie. I would really say that this is a comedy on the level of I can’t believe it, the mask.

Right. But just with today’s VFX and the large budgets that comic book movies get today, because don’t forget, The Mask was also a comic book movie and comparing any movie to the mask is high praise indeed. But I’m comfortable with it. I’m comfortable with making the comparison. I would also like to add that while watching this movie, I was like, I was having such a good time. And I was I think when they were in the mansion and I was like, you know, that’s such a great scene sequence. It’s so good. And I was like, you know, the X-Men movies are just fine. Sure. They’ve made a couple of mistakes, a couple of really big mistakes. But for the most part, this is a great franchise that has a really distinct feel. That’s all it’s own. They don’t need any help. This thing’s going just fine the way it is. And it made me feel kind of sad that this could be lost. If they do indeed get swallowed up by the MCU. I’m not sure if it would be worth it. I mean, maybe just cameos here and there if it happens. But I really hope that the X-Men stay their own entity, their own franchise, and that they’re able to to to maintain this and just make this better.

But it’s already making itself better. The X-Men movies are great. And this is very much, I would say, an X-Men movie, which is interesting. I love it. I really like this movie a lot. So that’s my review of Deadpool to the spoiler review will be coming soon and we have so much to discuss. But for now, leave your non spoiler comments down below.
